Borderless Journalism Fund

The Borderless Journalism Fund (BJF) is a multi-donor fund providing support to high-quality, independent journalism operating in challenging environments. The BJF prioritizes underfunded regions where support is particularly impactful; under-covered crises; marginalized communities, and organizations operating in places with limited press freedom. The Fund strives to be complementary to and not duplicative of other journalism funding efforts.

Through targeted grantmaking, research, partner support, convening, and advocacy the fund aims to:

Support journalists in crises: Provide operating support for organizations and individuals who are working in difficult environments, including media organizations reporting from hostile or restrictive environments and journalists in exile;

Improve duty of care: Invest in journalism safety and security infrastructure; and,

Build resilience: Support efforts within the journalism sector to adapt to emerging risks and challenges, including reduced press freedom, shrinking civic space, misinformation, and threats posed by technology and platform innovations.

Our activities are informed by a trust-based and systemic approach, seeking leverage through a mix of methods to drive change:

Grantmaking: The preponderance of contributions toward the BJF are reserved for sub granting to organizations aligned with the Fund’s goals. In collaboration with the Fund’s partners, this includes supporting journalism in restrictive and/or under-funded geographies, under-covered crises, exiled media, as well as efforts to support physical, digital, legal, and emotional safety and security.

Partner Support: HUCF maintains a commitment to accompany our partners beyond their immediate grants, providing additional financial and/or non-financial support according to the grantee’s need. We work with partners to understand their organizational development and strive to cultivate an enabling environment for them to participate in mutual aid and collective assistance.

Convening: We support the participation and contribution of Fund partners in national, regional, and global fora. This may include support through direct programming and the production of panels, side events, and conferences, while also supporting visa, travel, and security support to partners.

Donor Coordination: To create an enabling environment for international journalism, we work to catalyze resources to the field, coordinating and collaborating with donors and partners.
